Meet Liza
Liza Shtromberg embodies modern multi-culturalism. Born in Moscow and raised in both Russia and a small port town in Israel, she immigrated to Los Angeles with her family at 16 (her father is an accomplished stone-cutter and cameo designer). She’s now married to a Japanese man, also an artist, who prepares sushi-Shabbat dinners for the family.
As a trilingual child, she began experimenting with jewelry design as a form of self expression. Her father owned a jewelry gallery in the old quarter of Jaffo, Israel, where she helped him by creating wax molds for fine jewelry castings. As a teenager, she did simple wire-work, stringing native Indian peyote beads and crystals and selling her designs on the streets of Los Angeles. But even back then, as a culture-curious kid at Hollywood High in the ’80s, it was the raw materials that drew her.
Shtromberg’s fascination with jewelry design comes, in part, from a deep respect for what the craft has meant over the millennia. Throughout history, and across cultures, jewelry has been an integral part of the human experience. We’ve been adorning our bodies with raw materials – albeit, bracelets made of woven grass and bits of shell for over 75,000 years. Jewelry is more than an accessory; it’s a religious token, a treasured family heirloom passed down from mother to daughter, a glittering status symbol, a currency, a memento, a talisman, an expression of love. Ultimately, jewelry is an expression of self.
With this in mind, Shtromberg helps her clients personalize their selections, mixing and matching elements from her different collections – the stone from one bracelet, set in a separate necklace or an alternate metal to help them “find themselves” through her jewelry.
Though Shtromberg has a loyal clientele of both stylists and celebrities – Rachel Weisz, Nelly Furtado and Kiefer Sutherland are regular clients – she rejects a trend-centered approach to designing. Rather, her jewelry is meant to be classic, universal, organic, “playing into who you really are,” she says. Each collection is strategically conceived to layer well with the others – as well as with jewelry the client may already have. And with new collections coming out four times a year, there’s no shortage of options.
So venture into the exotic and storied world of Liza Shtromberg. Let the stones transform you and transport you beyond the horizons you know. And listen carefully: they may very well have something to say.
